Train wreck

Have u ever try to stop a speeding train?
knowing it would not stop.. knowing that it's not slowing down for you.
and all you have is just hopes and good faith that...it will.. for you. cos you are somewhat special.

Heard on Horton hears a who!

This weekend i've found my self wondered off again on sunday, with my favorite Ally, Ms.Hakiki, doing our same old-same old.. Like Sorting our heads on brunch, browsing through shoe-shop while contemplating things, and blurted fragment of thoughts by the sale box, basically just trying to figure out life.. and somehow by the afternoon, feeling like we have grow wiser and running out of shop to stroll, anyway.. we decided to go to the theater and end up watching HORTON HEARS A WHO..

and it was the right decision to make! Cos by the end of the movie,.. we have grow even wiser (^0^)v

Check out my favorite lines from the movie:
KATIE: "On my specks everyone's a pony, and they all eat rainbow and poop butterflies..."

HORTON: "I can't put it down. And I won't! After all A person is a person. No matter how small."

HORTON(upon crossing a long unsteady bridge): I have to think light. I'm light as a feather. I am light as a feather.

HORTON: All right, I gotta get this speck up to the top of Mount Nool A.S.A.P, whatever that means, probably act swiftly awesome packaderm!

HORTON: I will make monkeys of these monkeys, for it is their destiny!

KANGAROO: Have you forgotten what we've discussed?
HORTON: Oh no, I'm an elephant and elephants never forget, it's a curse really! I remember, I was on my head and you said hmm and I looked up and you said ,what are you doing?, and I said the thing about the speck, then you pulled my ears and you poked me in the forehead...
KANGAROO: Horton!
HORTON: Well you did.

there are many more, but its more than i can remember from one sitting.. so,.. i'll post some again,.. maybe ;p

LA SEMAINE DE LA FRANCOPHONIE 2008 à JAKARTA

Long weekend, and I got no plans.
So, when Mr. Blackberry tells me about this frankofoni festival, I was excited to go. I got four days to waste, anyway.. And decided to waste it on some french-culture-exposure.
CCF was having this LA SEMAINE DE LA FRANCOPHONIE 2008 à JAKARTA, on 17 - 22 Maret 2008.
There were gonna be movie screening, Exhibition "collage of francophonie", food bazzar, Pintemps des poètes,.. and so on,..
shortly i agreed to ‘go-French’ this weekend.
The grand-plan was, we are going to go to CCF to watch this french movie, and then go to Grand indonesia for some pintemps des poètes and then find some croissant to fill us up..

Since this is my first, CCF theater visit.. i cannot helped to compared it to my regular mall-based commercial theather..
Though the CCF theather were smaller in scale (much-much smaller), it was nice, the seat was quite comfy, there was no line-up, and the food was affordable compared to that on 21 or XXI. the movie we watch was' pas de panique', a french-drama-comedy, it was quite entertaining,

and free. i still cant get over the fact that it is free. we only spent money on food while waiting for the movie to start. but i wonder,.. why there is only 6 people-(including us) enjoying this free-movie?

anyway going to Pintemps des poètes at grand indonesia, we are kinda disappointed, the poetry reading was to loooongg apart,.. waiting for it was unbelievably boring, though there were a poetry-give away, package in a bamboo box, but the poetry inside it doesnt live-up to my hollywood-established-image-of-french expectation at all. it was about a brother, a duck and a lady boss, i think. if there was hidden meaning behind those poems, well we simply just dont get it. So we decided to cheer ourself with a bucket of crunchy-caramel-popcorn (not very french, i know).
Though before we go, i decided to have a quick stop at the ladies room. and delighted to find that each of the restrooms have different poetry attached.. and my favorite goes like this:

JUNI BULAN HUJAN
by mikael Johani

aku ingin mencintaimu dengan sederhana
tapi ingin terlalu kompleks dan cinta terlalu banana

senryu 4 u

berdempet dempet
pitcher bir dan sigaret
matamu lucu
-

ok, i admit it was 'cinta terlalu banana' that got me.. but its light and fun.. which how weekend should!

JAKARTA, INDONESIA — A SINKING GIANT?*

by Andre Vltchek

Today, high-rises dot the skyline, hundreds of thousands of vehicles
belch fumes on congested traffic arteries and super-malls have become
the cultural centers of gravity in Jakarta, the fourth largest city in
the world. In between towering super-structures, humble kampongs house
the majority of the city dwellers, who often have no access to basic
sanitation, running water or waste management.

While almost all major capitals in the Southeast Asian region are
investing heavily in public transportation, parks, playgrounds,
sidewalks and cultural institutions like museums, concert halls and
convention centers, Jakarta remains brutally and determinately
'pro-market' — profit-driven and openly indifferent to the plight of
a majority of its citizens who are poor.
Most Jakartans have never left Indonesia, so they cannot compare their
capital with Kuala Lumpur or Singapore; with Hanoi or Bangkok.
Comparative statistics and reports hardly make it into the local
media. Despite the fact that the Indonesian capital is for many
foreign visitors a 'hell on earth,'the local media describes Jakarta
as "modern," "cosmopolitan, " and "a sprawling metropolis." Newcomers
are often puzzled by Jakarta's lack of public amenities.

Bangkok, not exactly known as a user-friendly city, still has several
beautiful parks. Even cash-strapped Port Moresby, capital of Papua New
Guinea, boasts wide promenades, playgrounds, long stretches of beach
and sea walks.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur compete with each other in building wide
sidewalks, green areas as well as cultural establishments. Manila,
another city without a glowing reputation for its public amenities,
has succeeded in constructing an impressive sea promenade dotted with
countless cafes and entertainment venues while preserving its World
Heritage Site at Intramuros. Hanoi repaved its wide sidewalks and
turned a park around Huan-Kiem Lake into an open-air sculpture museum.

But in Jakarta, there is a fee for everything. Many green spaces have
been converted to golf courses for the exclusive use of the rich. The
approximately one square kilometer of Monas seems to be the only real
public area in a city of more than 10 million. Despite being a
maritime city, Jakarta has been separated from the sea, with the only
focal point being Ancol, with a tiny, mostly decrepit walkway along
the dirty beach dotted with private businesses.

Even to take a walk in Ancol, a family of four has to spend
approximately $4.50 (40,000 Indonesian Rupiahs) in entrance fees,
something unthinkable anywhere else in the world. The few tiny public
parks which survived privatization are in desperate condition and
mostly unsafe to use.

There are no sidewalks in the entire city, if one applies
international standards to the word "sidewalk." Almost anywhere in the
world (with the striking exception of some cities in the United
States, like Houston and Los Angeles) the cities themselves belong to
pedestrians. Cars are increasingly discouraged from traveling in the
city centers. Wide sidewalks are understood to be the most ecological,
healthy and efficient forms of short-distance public transportation in
areas with high concentrations of people.

In Jakarta, there are hardly any benches for people to sit and relax,
and no free drinking water fountains or public toilets. It is these
small, but important, 'details' that are symbols of urban life
anywhere else in the world.

Most world cities, including those in the region, want to be visited
and remembered for their culture. Singapore is managing to change its
'shop-till-you- drop' image to that of the center of Southeast Asian
arts. The monumental Esplanade Theatre has reshaped the skyline,
offering first-rate international concerts in classical music, opera,
ballet, and also featuring performances from some of the leading
contemporary artists from the region. Many performances are subsidized
and are either free or cheap, relative to the high incomes in the
city-state.

Kuala Lumpur spent $100 million on its philharmonic concert hall,
which is located right under the Petronas Towers, among the tallest
buildings in the world. This impressive and prestigious concert hall
hosts local orchestra companies as well top international performers.
The city is currently spending further millions to refurbish its
museums and galleries, from the National Museum to the National Art
Gallery.

Hanoi is proud of its culture and arts, which are promoted as its
major attraction — millions of visitors flock into the city to visit
countless galleries stocked with canvases, which can be easily
described as some of the best in Southeast Asia. Its beautifully
restored Opera House regularly offers Western and Asian music treats.

Bangkok's colossal temples and palaces coexist with extremely
cosmopolitan fare — international theater and film festivals,
countless performances, jazz clubs with local and foreign artists on
the bill, as well as authentic culinary delights from all corners of
the world. When it comes to music, live performances and nightlife,
there is no city in Southeast Asia as vibrant as Manila.

Now back to Jakarta. Those who have ever visited the city's 'public
libraries' or National Archives building will know the difference. No
wonder; in Indonesia education, culture and arts are not considered to
be 'profitable' (with the exception of pop music), and are therefore
made absolutely irrelevant. The country spends the third lowest amount
in the world on education (according to The Economist, only1.2 percent
of its GDP) after Equatorial Guinea and Ecuador (there the situation
is now rapidly improving with the new progressive government).

Museums in Jakarta are in appalling condition, offering absolutely no
important international exhibitions. They look like they fell on the
city from a different era and no wonder — the Dutch built almost all
of them. Not only are their collections poorly kept, but they lack
elements of modernity — there are no elegant cafes, museum shops,
bookstores or even public archives. It appears that the individuals
running them are without vision and creativity. However, even if they
did have inspired ideas, there would be no funding to carry them out.

It seems that Jakarta has no city planners, only private developers
that have no respect for the majority of its inhabitants who are poor
(the great majority, no matter what the understated and manipulated
government statistics say). The city abandoned itself to the private
sector, which now controls almost everything, from residential housing
to what were once public areas.

While Singapore decades ago, and Kuala Lumpur recently, managed to
fully eradicate poor, unsanitary and depressing kampongs from their
urban areas, Jakarta is unable or unwilling to offer its citizens
subsidized, affordable housing equipped with running water,
electricity, a sewage system, wastewater treatment facilities,
playgrounds, parks, sidewalks and a mass public transportation system.

Rich Singapore aside, Kuala Lumpur with only 2 million inhabitants
boasts one metro line (Putra Line), one monorail, several efficient
Star LRT lines, suburban train links and high-speed rail system
connecting the city with its new capital Putrajaya. The "Rapid" system
counts on hundreds of modern, clean and air-conditioned buses. Transit
is subsidized; a bus ticket on "Rapid" costs only $.60 (2 Malaysian
Ringgits) for unlimited day use on the same line. Heavily discounted
daily and monthly passes are also available.

Bangkok contracted German firm Siemens to build two long "Sky Train"
lines and one metro line. It is also utilizing its river and channels
as both public transportation and as a tourist attraction. Despite
this enormous progress, the Bangkok city administration claims that it
is building an additional 50 miles (80 kilometers) of tracks for these
systems in order to convince citizens to leave their cars at home and
use public transportation.

Polluting pre-historic buses are being banned from Hanoi, Singapore,
Kuala Lumpur and gradually from Bangkok. Jakarta, thanks to corruption
and phlegmatic officials, is in its own league even in this field.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting, in its reports covering quality of
life, places Jakarta repeatedly on the level of poor African and South
Asian cities, below metropolises like Nairobi and Medellin.

Considering that it is in the league with some of the poorest capitals
of the world, Jakarta is not cheap. According to the Mercer Human
Resource Consulting 2006 Survey, Jakarta ranked as the 48th most
expensive city in the world for expatriate employees, well above
Berlin (72nd), Melbourne (74th) and Washington D.C. (83rd). And if it
is expensive for expatriates, how is it for local people with a GDP
per capita below $1,000?

Curiously, Jakartans are silent. They have become inured to appalling
air quality just as they have gotten used to the sight of children
begging, even selling themselves at the major intersections; to entire
communities living under elevated highways and in slums on the shores
of canals turned into toxic waste dumps; to the hours-long commutes;
to floods and rats.

But if there is to be any hope, the truth has to eventually be told,
and the sooner the better. Only a realistic and brutal diagnosis can
lead to treatment and a cure. As painful as the truth can be, it is
always better than self-deceptions and lies.

Jakarta has fallen decades behind capitals in the neighboring
countries — in esthetics, housing, urban planning, standard of
living,
quality of life, health, education, culture, transportation, food
quality and hygiene. It has to swallow its pride and learn from Kuala
Lumpur, Singapore, Brisbane and even in some instances from its poorer
neighbors like Port Moresby, Manila and Hanoi.

Comparative statistics have to be transparent and widely available.
Citizens have to learn how to ask questions again, and how to demand
answers and accountability. Only if they understand to what depths
their city has sunk can there be any hope of change.

"We have to watch out," said a concerned Malaysian filmmaker during
New Year's Eve celebrations in Kuala Lumpur. "Malaysia suddenly has
too many problems. If we are not careful, Kuala Lumpur could end up in
20 or 30 years like Jakarta!"

Could this statement be reversed? Can Jakarta find the strength and
solidarity to mobilize in time catch up with Kuala Lumpur? Can decency
overcome greed? Can corruption be eradicated and replaced by
creativity? Can private villas shrink in size and green spaces, public
housing, playgrounds, libraries, schools and hospitals expand?

An outsider like me can observe, tell the story and ask questions.
Only the people of Jakarta can offer the answers and solutions.

Lucky in jazz

It was a Jakarta’s kind of weekend
it was what everybody was doing and
it was where everybody had gone to…
it was the Java Jazz Festival 2008.

The ticket was fairly priced.
I only paid Rp. 275.000 for a day pass, which is a bargain I think, considered the normal price was Rp. 500.000 (though I kinda cheated the ticket price by using Mr. Blackberry brother's student card).
But, in my defense is,
even if I didn’t cheated the ticket price, there were ways to get the ticket in a fair price and fair way, anyway..
here are just some of the ways I knew:
1. BNI credit card buy 1 get one free for Rp. 500.000 promo,
(we tried this but Mr. Blackberry kinda miss the due date)
2. through friends who work at companies that sponsored the festival
I tried this second but the timing was not right..
3. Student price Rp. 275.000 -(must show student ID card).-this is how I cheated.
4. Citybank credit card promotion for Rp. 300.000
5. early bird tickets at Rp.350.000 and last
6. even if you bought from an unofficial dealer on the ‘D’ day it was still priced at Rp. 300.000,..so you still get lower price than the normal Rp. 500.000 price,..
why they even bother to put a normal price tag, the ticket was never on normal price anyway…

So, we arrived by taxi to avoid parking hazzle...
Got there by 4 pm, feeling thrilled and excited to enjoy our treacherously-gained-tickets.
First thing we do was going around the festival, while waiting for the Renee Olstead 5 PM show.
Taking a glance at this new local artist ‘Ari Groovology’,
I must say I like him better when he's not singing his own song,
hmn,.. funny…

Then we continued going around the venue checking and remembering the lay-out…
on 4. 40 PM we decided to join the line-up to see Renee live…
We pick a spot.. festival, centre..
and was only 5 meters away from Renee, and wow,..
Renee does sounds o….soo sooo heavenly-good….
though…
I didn’t approved her choice of clothing-(it makes her look 5 years older)-,
I didn’t like her RED-RED lipstick-(this also adds several years to her looks)-,
And her hair cut..-(too plain, and the bangs were kinda wrong for her face)-
but with a voice like that I think she can get away with anything…
and she does!
Mr. Blackberry overlook those details and just fall in love with her.. that instant..
meanwhile I was annoyed, when Renee started to sang ‘a love that will last’,
cos' everybody sang along with her….
I mean ‘shut-up people!'
'I came here to hear Renee sing!'
'Not youuu!’ ...
however,.. after the song,..
Renee said that "this is the first time that I had a sing-along on my lived performance, thank you, guys..!"
I got goosebumps, when she says that..
I kinda see her point of view
and i'm glad that everybody sang along with her...
she was impressed.. she has fans here..

After Renee at 6.20 PM I was starving.. so we go to the food area,
going there we past through coke zero-freedrink-booth…
its been a long time since my last coke, you know…
and this one is a cold-zerosugar-coke
so I took a sip…
and I cannot stop
I was amaze by it..
and I sip-sip-sip to the bottom of the cup..
(I had sworn off soda, so its very unlikely that I am going to buy a coke consciously, so that day, I took a chance and indulge on free soda)…
the food venue was thick with smoke, from all the foodstall and cigarette, plus air circulation there was minor, so it was very hot and sticky..
the cold coke was heaven sent
Decided to eat our food outside, we sit under the flag pole..
where air still pleasantly blew…
after finish eating,
we shamelessly take another cup of that free-cold-soda-joy..
and I thank god for free soda, today!

At 07.00 PM we go around the venue again…
Checking out Dian Pramana Putra, nice.. I’m impressed
Found empty chairs on another room and rest our sore feet listening to sound check.. –(it’s the chairs that interest us not the sound check)-

By 7.30 PM off we go, to see marc Antoine n paul simmons,
I’m not a really big fan of instrumental music but they are really good at what they’re doing and really enjoying themselves so I come to appreciate it,..
Well,.. that and the fact that we’re also waiting for D’sound to performed on 9.00 PM and their stage were practically right next to D’sound stage.
So it’s a practical call to listen to them while we secure ourselves a spot on D’sound..
practical jazz…
before Marc Antoine finishes their performance, he makes a note about Java jazz festival, he said..
"Jakarta, you are very lucky to have this festival, HERE... cos you don’t have to travel far to enjoy it."
"There are, probably, only about 20 jazz festival around the world, but i think that this is the BIGGEST ONE!!"
clap- clap- clap...
O wow,.. already I feel like my Rp. 275.000 ticket pays its value, and
as marc Antoine and Paul Simmons waved goodbye...
..
D’sound’s stage opens-up..
‘talkin’ talk’ and ‘tattoed on my mind’..
was awesome..
woowww, I approved everything they do or didn't do
when Incognito leading vocalist, Tony Momrelle, come up on stage and did a duet with Simone Larsen …….
it was unexpectedly nice suprise...
everything was right but,..
well, i try hard not to get annoyed by this guy standing behind me, with an overly-loud-voice screaming
improvised-version-of-D’sound-songs on my ears-(please note that it’s a DON’T)-
I mean “my god!.. Fans!! can’t you have a goodtime without being annoying!
I mean "COME ON!!"
So, I pretend that his not there… and before I knew,
D’sound ended their performances and announced that there will be album signing after the show,
I was histerical with excitement,.. but then I remember,
I don’t have their album, and my MP3 tracks were copied from a friend,..
soo that realization kinda calms me down, as i walk away from their stage..

after D’sound we were kinda torn between Ray parker jr and Incognito.
Cos they were scheduled to play at the same time.
So we make a list of pros and cons
For Ray parker jr:
1. Stage distance was only as little as 5 metres away and
2. As we were talking we’re already secure a good spot there and
3. Incognito was kinda overplayed and it would be a struggle to get inside.

For Incognito:
1. You cannot deny that Incognito were more familiar and popular,..
I mean just check the line up to see them perform.

So 3 for Ray Parker Jr. and 1 for Incognito.
Mr. Blackberry come up with this idea to look ‘em up with his blackberry and compare them.
whoever have more hits song! That’s the one we’re going to catch live...
o, well u knew the answer..already….

anyway I was thirsty from all the coke and I still have Rp.25.000 worth of token from dinner so we kinda have to let go our Ray parker jr spot anyway.
We go to this foodstall, buy my self a bread with chocolate filling (at a hilarious price of Rp. 15.000) and 300ml of Aqua (also at a hilarious price of Rp. 10.000)..
luckily that was the exact amount of my token ( cos the other food was even more hilariously priced)
The bread was plesantly warm and the chocolate filling was melting to my amusement (not so much for the floss bread though-reviewed by Mr. Blackberry–,must remember this next time)

So after bread and water, we joined the line up to see incognito live, it was already 11.00 PM the place was –as predicted- packed..
And we didn’t get a good spot there…
I was standing behind this tall guy who blocked pretty much 80% of my view… and keep moving his head from side to side, so I have to keep on moving my head counter-this-guy’s-head side to side.
Which is annoying… But lucky me,
Mr. blackberry also gets annoyed by my hyper-active head movement
so he offer to swap his better-viewed spot with mine, which I gladly accepted..
obviously..
it was same old-same old with Incognito..
though they said they’re about to release a new album this april and they gave us a preview from their next album..
I was not impressed…
or maybe it was one of those song that u have to grew into..
O, I don’t know…
I was more impressed by their blown-instrument-trio, who did this silly coreograph dance in between blowing their trumpets/ saxophone/ flute/whatever..
which was madly comical and entertaining…
and that’s how the festival ended on 1 AM
feeling quite beat up, with a sore neck, blister on our foot, and a back pain.. we head home after 9 hour of jazz.
we go outside look for a cab
and i am glad that we decided to take the cab..
cos walking outside is quicker than walking to the parking lot
no driving home
no line-up to get out of the parking lot,
no line-up to pay parking ticket..
i can just sit & straighten my legs.. rest my neck.. and
reliable cab was already waiting outside to take us home.
O yess, we are Lucky in Jazz…

chemistry or chemical high ?

HEART:
" waiit wait.."
"whaa.. what just happen a moment ago?"
"You know, the moment when we see sparks fly.."
"and life is new and exciting everytime we see this guy?"
"the chemistry was so right.."
"now its all gone..."
"what happen?"
"...."

"Why life just seem so ordinary today?"

BRAIN:
*I think we were only on CHEMICAL HIGH..*

HEART:
"CHEMICAL HIGH?"

BRAIN:
*yes, we were on chemical high with: DOPAMINE, which makes us feel good, producing a feeling of bliss.*

HEART:
" yes,..it was pure bliss and dreamy isn't it?"

BRAIN:
* and NOREPINEPHRINE, it stimulates the production of adrenaline. Makes 'you'-(heart) race and feel excited.*

HEART:
" o yeaahh, remember how restless we were? and you can't take him out of your head"

BRAIN:
*well, yeahh.. thanks to you!*
*anyway together Dopamine & Norepinephrine produce elation, intense energy, sleeplessness, craving, loss of appetite and focused attention to the object of our affection.*

HEART:
"True, we've lost weight and it was impossible to sleep"

BRAIN:
* And there's more,.. PEA or phenylethylamine, its a chemical that speeds up the flow of information between nerve cells. well,
combine these three chemicals, give us a potent infatuation or "chemistry."*

HEART:
"Yes, thats what i mean, the chemistry was so right!"
"what happen?"

BRAIN:
*No! you mean our body mix us the right hormones..*
*the MIXTURE was soo right*

HEART:
"huhh....?!"
"okay, so its.. hormones.. "
"mix, served and consumed by ourself?!"
"Thats not romantic!"...
"thats deppressing, ..thats like.... poisoning ourself.. "

BRAIN:
*i know.......*

and life is a chore to live
life blessed me with family and friends
to fly me off these burden days

when the hard part is over
the struggle is done and loss
and nothing for me to do but wait
in waiting i find life trivia
and it put smile in my frown
now, am i not the luckiest girl?

i am...
cos life loves to love me
^_^

these days

i've trip on life..
or maybe life has trick me
been there before
got through before
i'll get through again

these days will past
and soon i'll forget
tell my self to be patient
for these won't last
